What Google Docs Can Do and How IT Works

Google Docs is Google's online word-processing application for creating, editing, formatting, sharing and collaborating on documents. Documents are normally stored in Google Drive and changes are saved automatically while you work, making Docs useful for letters, reports, meeting notes, procedures, coursework, collaborative drafts and everyday office documents.

Page Setup, Margins, Orientation and Breaks

Page setup controls the physical layout of a document when it is printed or exported to PDF. For office documents intended for UK printing, A4 portrait is a common starting point, while landscape can be useful for wide tables or schedules; page and section breaks should be used instead of repeatedly pressing Enter to force content onto anotherp age.

Downloading, Exporting, Converting and Printing

A Google Doc remains an online Google document until you intentionally download, print or create another copy. Choose the output format according to what the recipient needs: keep the Google Doc for live collaboration, use Microsoft Word when an editable Word file is required, and use PDF when a stable viewing or printing layout is more important than continued editing.

Spelling, Grammar, Word Count and Writing Tools

Google Docs includes tools that can help identify spelling and grammar issues, count words, find repeated text and support faster drafting. These tools are useful assistants rather than substitutes for checking the document yourself, because names, figures, specialist terminology and the intended meaning can still be wrong even when no automatic warning appears.

Smart Chips, Dropdowns and Building Blocks

Google Docs can include interactive smart features that connect a document with people, files, dates and structured information. These tools can make project notes, meeting documents and collaborative records easier to use, although the exact smart chips and building blocks available depend on the Google Workspace account and current Google Docs interface.
